The best barbershops in downtown Toronto

Summer may be a time to chill out and relax, but that doesn’t mean letting your hair care routine run wild. Good grooming never takes a vacation. Here are a few tips on where to get  groomed as a guy in downtown Toronto.

1. Terry’s Hair Studio

Terry’s Hair Studio (384 Yonge Street  #62-63) is hidden away in the lower level of The Shops at Aura. The main entrance for the shops is on Yonge Street, just north of Gerrard, on the west side of the street. Terry’s can be tricky to find the first time. Going there feels almost like you’ve been let in on a secret. You half expect to have to give a password at the door when you arrive. Once you find it, you may never go anywhere else. The staff are friendly and talented, and Terry himself may be one of best barbers in the city.

First time visitors will love Terry’s. They care about what they do and go above and beyond to make you look your best. Even if you only have a rough idea (or no idea) of what you want, they will work with you to come up with something that really works for you.

When it comes time to pay, that’s when you’ll be glad Terry keeps his overhead expenses low. A men’s cut is only $17! They also offer shaving and trimming services, colourings, body waxing, and a glorious head and scalp massage. Terry’s clientele is loyal. The secret may be out on this secret little place, so make sure you call ahead and book an appointment. Remember to give yourself a few extra minutes to find it and arrive on time!

2. Manstop Barber Shop

Manstop Barber Shop (71 Duncan Street) is another hidden barbershop that may not look like much from the outside, but the experience inside is perfection. It’s located on the second floor of a 3 story building. If you weren’t looking for it, you may not notice it was there. Once you find it, you may never forget it. The owner, Tin, is a top notch barber and stylist and she has assembled a razor sharp team of talent to back her up. From classic modern men’s cuts, to straight razor shaves, beard trimming and more. A shave and a haircut may cost you a bit more than two bits — it’s actually $65 — but it’s money well spent. A basic men’s cut is $33. If you want to save a few bucks, you can opt for an apprentice cut for $20.

If you’re one of those guys who doesn’t know what they want, or what would look good on you — this is the place for you. The team at Manstop will take a close look at you and create a custom cut that suits your style and the shape of your face. The best part is their refreshing hot towel service which is part and parcel of whatever you buy. It may seem simple — but it’s deeply satisfying.

Walk-ins are welcome at Manstop, but you would be wise to book online. It’s easy and will save you time. The online booking even gives you an estimate of how long your appointment will take. All prices include taxes (not tip). Only cash and debit are accepted. You’re in good hands — Manstop has thought of everything.

3. James Hair Salon

James Hair Salon (193 Church St) is your friendly neighbourhood barber. They offer great services for very reasonable prices. The place feels like it has a bit of small town charm paired with big city talent and convenience. The barbers are friendly and skilled at what they do. They wash your hair and give you a little scalp massage before the cut, who doesn’t love that? And they’ll give you some tips on how to maintain your look and style until you return for a touch up. For a basic wash and cut can be in and out in under thirty minutes. It may be the best $25 you ever spent.

Top 10 Tattoo & Barber Shop  at 716 Yonge Street is super convenient if you’re looking to trim your mop top and get inked all in one shop! Just a haircut today? No problem. The barbers in this unique space do a great job for a great price. After House of Lords closed its doors, their team of barbers and stylists crossed the street and came here. The House didn’t fall – it just moved house a few doors north.

5. Axe & Hatchet Grooming Club

Don’t call Axe & Hatchet Grooming Club (12B, 101 Yorkville Ave) a barbershop. It’s a full service grooming club. Owner Dante Perrone describes it as a hybrid. It’s like an old school barbershop blended with a twist of modern salon, and a bit of a chill cafe vibe thrown in for good measure. It’s not what you might expect from a fancy Yorkville Salon. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Chill out, relax, have a coffee and get a great cut.

As with many things in life – you get what you pay for. A men’s cut will run you $50, a beard grooming is $20, and ‘The Works’ will set you back $75 (plus tip). For those who believe in treating themselves to the best, the talent of the staff and the luxurious, yet unpretentious experience is worth every penny.

All services are by appointment only. If you book online your appointment will be confirmed online, and you’ll get a text the day before your appointment to remind you to go.

Get ready to look your best! These local barbershops will treat you right.
