Laughter is the best medicine which is why we love JFL42! You can expect side-splitting laughs at this festival. This year’s event takes over various Toronto venues from September 21st to 30th. It features world-class headliners as well as 42 smaller, but hilarious, performers. You can see as many of them as you like, thanks to the festival’s pass system. We caught up with the festival’s spokesperson Charlene Coy to find out more about what’s in store this season!
So Charlene, what makes JFL42 different from JFL?
The Just For Laugh comedy festival in Montreal has been going on for 35 years, and carries with it the status of being one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world. Toronto’s JFL42 has been around for only a fraction of that time, yet has been proving for years now that it can hold its own against its sister-festival down the 401. JFL42 allows comedy fans to make use of its incredibly versatile pass system. Pass holders can use one of their digital token credits to reserve a show one night, where once they check-in at the venue, their credit is immediately returned on their account so they can reserve the next show they want to see. Every time they check-in at a show, their credits go back, allowing them to keep curating their schedule for the entire fest.
Wow, so the laughs are unlimited!? Who are some of the comedians that people are excited to see this year?
Every year offers an entirely new lineup of comedians ready to deliver the laughs across Toronto, and this year’s producers have delivered an incredible lineup that’ll reward fans who come back year after year. Whether it’s to catch headliners like Ali Wong, Mike Birbiglia and John Mulaney, or some of the illustrious 42 acts such as Jenny Slate, Jay Pharoah, the Lucas Bros or Colin Quinn.
Comedy isn’t single format and not every format is to everyone’s taste. What styles of comedy can you expect to see at JFL42?
With JFL42 there a plethora of shows fit for everyone who likes a variety of comedy. Whether you want to take in the storytelling of Mike Birbiglia or Tom Segura, enjoy the unique stylings of Tim & Eric or My Favourite Murder; or utilize the pass system to its full extent to take-in night after night of comedy with W. Kamau Bell, Sasheer Zamata, Judah Friedlander or Kyle Kinane. There’s something for everyone.
You can’t go wrong with variety! Your website describes the various venues for the festival as “intimate”. What kind of capacity do they accommodate? Are any of the venues notable?
JFL42 pops up all over Toronto, with some spectacular theatres, but also in the best comedy rooms that the city has to offer. Our headliners perform at both Sony Centre and the Winter Garden Theatre, offering thousands of comedy fans the chance to come in and see their favourites. From there, venues range from Queen Elizabeth Theatre to the Royal Cinema, over to the classic Toronto comedy hotspots of the Rivoli and The Comedy Bar. We call them intimate because no matter the size of the room, our venues serve to create an inclusive audience experience, wherein the emphasis is always on the comedy.
