Find Balance at Reach Yoga

Find Balance at Reach Yoga

We all want balance in our lives, but sometimes it can be really hard to establish it. There is no one ‘right way’ to achieve it — it’s an ongoing practice and commitment. Incorporating yoga into your life is a good place to start. We caught up with Cathy Mines, owner and founder of Reach Yoga (40 Underhill Dr, Don Mills) to talk about her studio and philosophy.

Cathy has been a certified Yoga Instructor since 2003 and created Reach with a “dream of creating a place where we could share yoga with our local community. As part of the deeper understanding of a life in balance, I have learned that collaboration, partnerships and community are the things I need most to keep me accountable to the message of yoga.” Helping to create and contribute to a community is a goal that came up several times in our conversation with Cathy — it’s also a key goal for Greenrock Communities. Reach Yoga has been a part of the Don Mills and Lawrence neighbourhood for the past 14 years. The studio is home to a “community of like hearted people looking to breathe, move and laugh their way out of life’s stresses.”

So what is yoga? The traditional definition of the word means to yoke, or to bind. The binding, or unifying of body, mind and spirit. Or as Cathy says, “In this busy life it may be more fitting to say re-establishing the connection of body mind and spirit as many of us find ourselves moving at such a fast pace that our connections are not as strong as they once were.” That sounds like balance, doesn’t it? Speaking of balance, you don’t need to be able to stand on one foot, or contort yourself into a specific posture to practice yoga — you just need to breathe deep and be present in the here and now.

At Reach Yoga we welcome you to come in whatever state of mind or body you find yourself in on any given day. This is not cookie cutter yoga, each one of us will have our own level of energy, our own capability and our own particular drive during each class. Our energy levels are different each day and I encourage people to go with how they feel and simply enjoy that they showed up!

At Reach, they teach Hatha Yoga. The classes focus not only on the postures of yoga, but also on breathing exercises and meditation. Instructors and students engage in a rich discussion of how this combination helps to restore balance within our body, mind and spirit.

Cathy established Reach Yoga in the Don Mills neighbourhood because it’s the place that she grew up in, it’s home. She says:

I’m not sure if it is the energy of all of the green space, being along the beautiful stretch of the Don Valley in the fall always blows my mind, and the sunsets here in Don Mills are amazing… it is the people that make it such a great place to live and work. Because of the people, we expand our community from just our scheduled yoga classes to have specialty classes, celebrations, and even musical guests and class trips. It is the people that make all of this possible.

Reach Yoga is an amazing business in the Don Mills and Lawrence neighbourhood and  just minutes away from Greenrock’s Wingreen Court Community. Let them help you find some balance in this fast paced life. Reach out and connect with your community.

Desserts that won’t ruin your resolutions

Desserts that won’t ruin your resolutions

A brand new year has just begun and that means making some resolutions. If you are like most people, eating healthy may be at the top of your list. Fortunately for you, eating healthy doesn’t mean that you have to give up desserts. TheGreenrock Property Management blog team is here to bring a little sweetness into your new year with some dessert ideas that won’t ruin your resolutions. These are just a few ideas for delicious and nutritious treats that are easy to make at home at Wingreen Court.

Paleo Lemon Squares

The recipe refers to them as Paleo Lemon Brownies, but we think these delicious desserts are more like lemon squares. They are light, lemony and moist, rather than chocolatey and fudgey. When something is referred to as ‘Paleo’, it means that it is low in carbohydrates, free from refined sugar, gluten-free, dairy-free and usually high in protein and healthy fats. These squares, as well as the glorious lemon glaze on top, are made primarily from almond flour and coconut (oil, milk, and butter) and gently sweetened with honey.

Vegan Fudge Brownies

Do healthy fudge brownies sound too good to be true? There must be a secret! The ‘fudge’ in these Vegan Fudge Brownies is actually made from black beans. Try it before you pass judgement. Let your family and friends try them, without saying the word ‘beans’, and see if they notice. Instead of being a guilty pleasure, this dessert is actually a good source of protein.

Crustless Apple Pie Baked Apples

These delicious and nutritious Crustless Apple Pie Baked Apples are a perfect treat, not only for fall, but for anytime of year. They taste amazing, and smell even better! You will love filling your Wingreen Court apartment with the aroma of apple and cinnamon on a chilly winter afternoon. And filling your mouth with the flavours of apple and cinnamon, especially when topped with a little ice cream, is the recipe for a perfect day.

Banana Ice Cream Sandwiches

These Banana Ice Cream Sandwiches taste incredibly good, while still being good for you. They are so delicious, you’ll be happy eating “ice cream” in the dead of winter! The banana cream is made by combining frozen bananas with soaked, raw cashews, coconut milk, maple syrup and few other wholesome ingredients. The cookie sandwich layers are made from almond butter, coconut oil, honey and sea salt. To top it all off – they are sprinkled with crumbled cacao nibs, nuts and toasted coconut.

Don’t deny your sweet tooth to keep your new year’s resolutions! The Greenrock blog team is here to make healthy living fun and accessible. We hope these dessert ideas help make 2017 a healthier and happier year. How to roast a turkey with all the trimmings

How to roast a turkey with all the trimmings

The holiday meal of turkey and all the trimmings is a tradition that is tough to beat, it can also be a tradition that is tough to make — but it doesn’t have to be. With the right preparation and the right attitude, anyone can tackle this sometimes-intimidating task. If you are hosting the holiday at your Wingreen Court apartment, or helping out at someone else’s, the Greenrock blog team is here to help relieve your stress with our guide for how to roast a turkey with all the trimmings!

Planning

As with most things in life, putting a plan into place will help you to complete the task with as little stress as possible. Do not try to do everything all at once, break the task down into bite-sized pieces. You can prepare the stuffing several days ahead of the big day and keep it in the freezer. Move it to the fridge the day before to let it thaw. Making the stuffing outside of the bird, in advance, will save you time on the day and the turkey will cook faster without stuffing. Remember to begin thawing the bird in the fridge the day before as well.

Classic Roast Turkey with Gravy

Cooking a turkey is actually pretty straightforward as long as you give yourself enough time to thaw and cook it. It’s going to take at least 3 to 4 hours to roast, so remember to baste it every 30 minutes or so. It’s all done when your meat thermometer reads 170F or the juices run clear when the turkey is pierced. Remove the turkey from the oven and tent it with aluminum foil for 30 minutes before carving.

Saucy Brussel Sprouts

Save even more time on the big day by preparing these Saucy Brussel Sprouts in advance and keep them in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

These classic Mashed Potatoes are made with Yukon Gold potatoes, cream cheese, garlic and butter and topped with Parmesan. Best of all, they only take about 20 minutes to prepare, so you can make them when the turkey comes out of the oven. They are a classic holiday side dish that are sure to please. They go exceptionally well with the gravy you’ve prepared with the turkey recipe.

Old Fashioned Apple Pie

You can’t go wrong when you serve this Old Fashioned Apple Pie for the holidays. Tart Granny Smith apples, tucked into a flaky, buttery crust. Perhaps best of all, is the aroma that will fill your Wingreen Court kitchen with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. It’s hard to top this dessert, except with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The Greenrock Property Management blog team hopes this guide for how to roast a turkey with all the trimmings helps to make your holiday a delicious day to be remembered. All you need to do is place the chicken in a pot, cover it with water and add whatever seasonal vegetables and herbs that you have on hand. Bring it all to a boil and simmer for about an hour an and twenty minutes.

Great tips for storing summer clothes

Great tips for storing summer clothes

Fall is finally here! It’s time to swap out your shorts, flip-flops and t-shirts for warm and fuzzy sweaters, wool socks and thick scarves. Get started today at Wingreen Court Apartments (2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 & 11 Wingreen Court) with these helpful tips from the blog team at Greenrock Property Management.

Simplify your summer wardrobe

The first tip for storing summer clothes is simple — don’t store stuff that you won’t actually wear again. After a full summer of wear-and-tear, you might surprise yourself with how many pieces of clothing you’re okay getting rid of. Make a difference by donating gently-used items to a local collection centre, such as Oasis Clothing Bank (60 Carnforth Road), less than a five-minute drive from Wingreen Court Apartments.

Clean it before you pack it

Storing dirty summer clothes is a recipe for disaster. From attracting bugs to creating unpleasant odors, it’s risky to pack away clothes that haven’t been properly cleaned first. For specialty items, Dry Cleaners Toronto (19 Waterman Avenue) is a 10-minute drive from Wingreen Court Apartments.

Use the right container

Now that you have a manageable amount of clean clothing ready to be stored, it’s just a matter of finding the right tub or crate to pack your items away. Use transparent containers to more easily spot the clothing you’ll want for that unexpected warm spell come spring. To keep your clothing and accessories in their best condition, leave a little breathing room in whatever type of box you use.

Transition into fall by smartly storing your summer clothes today. Use this post from Greenrock Property Managementto get started. For more information about Wingreen Court Apartments, please visit our website.

Baskin Robbins

You don’t get to be the biggest ice cream chain in the world without having a product to back it up. Baskin Robbins has been synonymous with ice cream since they opened in 1945. They have a location at 1448 Lawrence Avenue East – only an 8 minute bike ride or a 5 minute drive from your apartment at Wingreen Court. There is still time to sample all 31 flavours this summer!

Menchie’s

What Baskin Robbins has been doing for ice cream since 1945, Menchie’s is doing with frozen yogurt. This froyo chain features an ever-changing menu of flavours and your choice of toppings. What more could you want?! They have a location at 865 York Mills Road that you can ride you bicycle to in under 10 minutes from Wingreen Court.

Frosty treats for hot summer days

Frosty treats for hot summer days

Summer is in full force. The sun has been blazingly hot and there is hardly any relief in sight — but there is something you can do. The Greenrock Property Management blog team has some fun ideas for frozen treats that are easy to make at home in Wingreen Court (2 – 11 Wingreen Court, Toronto).

Frozen Banana Bites

A winning combination of simple, fun, and delicious — these frozen banana bites are the best.  A snack that combines peanut butter, bananas and chocolate — what could be better? You can substitute the toffee topping for anything you like — cookie crumbs, sprinkles, more chocolate, whatever!

Strawberry-Margarita Sorbet

Light, sweet and perfectly refreshing — this strawberry-margarita sorbet is the perfect summer treat. Skip the alcohol to make this recipe family-friendly. The best part about it is that It involves just a few simple ingredients — it’s also vegan and gluten-free.

Frozen Key Lime Pie

The subtle, sweet and tart taste of a key lime pie is unmistakable. It’s the perfect indulgent summer treat and is easier to make than it looks.  With only about 20 minutes of prep time and 5 minutes of cook time, followed by a few hours in the freezer, this is one simple recipe that we can’t get enough of.

One ingredient “ice cream”

Did you know you can make refreshing, vegan, gluten-free, no-sugar-added ice cream with only one ingredient?! It’s not fairy dust, it’s bananas! Frozen bananas to be exact. Some time in the freezer transforms the consistency and flavour of bananas so that when you whip them up in a food processor (or powerful blender) they become a creamy, gooey, custardy frozen treat. Play around with flavours by adding whatever else you like to the mix — from frozen raspberries to chopped chocolate and peanut butter.

The Greenrock blog team hopes these recipes for frosty treats provide some sweet relief from the summer heat. For information on Greenrock rental properties, please click here.
