There is no shortage of bars in Toronto. That’s no secret. But when was the last time you went to a ‘secret bar’? If you want to treat yourself to a special evening of mystery, puzzles, and top notch cocktails, you’ll want to discover Suite 114.
When we say “discover”, we mean that literally. The fun and mysterious secret society vibe of Suite 114 begins even before you step inside. You have to find it, first!
Imagine taking a step back in time, to the roaring 20’s — prohibition is in full swing and sipping cocktails is a criminal offense that could ‘land you in the can, see’. Don’t expect to see a sign on the front door that says: “Speakeasy”. You need to be in the know. You need to know where to go. And you need the password.
That’s the deal at Suite 114. It’s located at 116 Dundas West. There, now you know where to go! But it’s still not so easy to find. There is no sign. You’ll have to find the Martini Glass symbol to find the entrance. The first symbol is on the street level door, marked 116. Follow the Martini glass all the way up the stairs to the 3rd floor.
Suite 114 is the creation of Duncan Chan. Duncan is the owner of popular escape room Trapped, located In the same building, one floor below. There’s a hint! Trapped does have a sign out front, so you’ll know you’re on the right track when you see it.
The escape room vibe spills over to this speakeasy. To enter through the imposing steel door on the 3rd floor, you’ll have to solve a simple puzzle. This serves as the password. Congratulations! You’ve made it inside.
The interior of Suite 114 is dark, cozy and intimate. The soft, red glowing neon light above the well-stocked bar spreads throughout the dimly lit space. The friendly staff greet you. The glow welcomes you in. It glows above the mysterious curtains at the back of the room. Take a seat at the small tables along the wall, or settle into one of the soft, white sofas. The music is jivin’, but not too loud.
You can just make out the writing on the menu in the candlelight. Start off with one of their signature cocktails, carefully hand-crafted by their expert mixologists. The cocktails at Suite 114 can be strong. The Patio Reviver #1 is a good place to begin for the lightweight drinker. This light and sweet concoction of Aperol, Lillet, Orange Sorbet Syrup, Brickworks Craft Cider, and Grapefruit Twist, is light and easy to drink. They will also make you a mocktail with as much flair and creativity as anything on the menu. The Grapefruit Basil Vojito is a refreshing variation on a Mojito: Beattie’s Potato Vodka, Fresh grapefruit, Simple syrup, Basil leaves, Clingstone peach bitters, and Qcumber Soda. A good selection of craft beer is also available.
Once you’ve settled in, try unlocking their “secret menu”. You’ll have to solve another word puzzle to gain access to these secret, seasonal concoctions. Drinks range from $12 to $17 — not bad for a downtown premium cocktail bar.
There is some tasty, shareable food to nibble on — but it’s not a meal. Suite 114 is the secret spot you either begin your evening at, or end up at. The cheese platter and charcuterie are probably the most substantial offerings. The cheese platter is selection of local Ontario and European cheeses, served with a specialty jam. The charcuterie plate is a selection of cured and smoked meats, served with toasted baguettes and gherkin pickles.
Everything about Suite 114 is well thought out and fun. It all feels innovative, intimate and simultaneously very adult and playful. This is the perfect place for an unforgettable date night, fun gathering of friends, or to mark a milestone or other special occasion. It’s not your typical night out. It’s nice to know someone has spent so much time and effort creating something special. The secret is out. Just don’t tip off the fuzz, see!
