We’ve all been there. You’re starving but your favourite restaurants are closed. When you’re in the mood for late night food, you need to know where to go! Here are some of the best late night eats near Church and Wellesley. Dig in!
The Artful Dodger
The The Artful Dodger (10 Isabella Street) is not only one of the best spots for late night eats, it’s one of the best pubs near Church & Wellesley. This cozy and authentic British pub will treat you right. Their friendly staff will make you feel right at home. Where else can you get late night Fried Pickles (5 for $5.50) and a Scotch Egg ($6.50). If you’re really hungry, why not tuck into a plate of their famous Bangers and Mash – that’s sausage, mashed potatoes, gravy, beans and caramelized onions ($10). The Artful Dodger is like two pubs for the price of one – they’ve doubled up on everything. There are two bars, two pool tables, two dart boards, two jukeboxes and even two patios, front and back, for when the weather is warm, and two cozy fireplaces for when it’s not! They’re open daily until 2am.
The Keg Mansion
A light night meal at the The Keg Mansion (515 Jarvis Street) is a truly unique experience. The historic mansion is stunningly beautiful. It would feel imposing if not for the warm, inviting atmosphere within, not to mention the friendly and welcoming staff. As soon as you step inside you’ll know that this place is impressive, but not pretentious. The Keg is known for it’s high quality steaks and seafood, but they also have some amazing chicken dishes, including their Oven Roasted Chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, bacon-sautéed Brussels sprouts, and chicken demi-glace ($27). Make sure you save room to indulge in their amazing desserts, like their thick and rich Cheesecake, topped with fruit ($7) or the Billy Miner Pie – mocha ice cream on a chocolate crust with hot fudge, caramel and almonds ($6). The Dining Room is open Sunday to Thursday until 10pm, and Friday and Saturday until 11pm. The Lounge is open Sunday to Wednesday until Midnight and Thursday to Saturday until 1am.
You never need to check the time when you’re heading over to 7 West (7 Charles St West). They’re open 24/7 and have been for almost 25 years! It’s the place to be for some great late night comfort food, no matter what your mood. There’s great pizza, pastas and salads, plus substantial sandwiches like the Philly Steak Sandwich (15.95) — a panini stuffed with sliced ribeye steak sauteed with chipotle BBQ sauce, mushrooms, onions, peppers and melted mozzarella cheese. If you’re in the mood for a 3am breakfast, they’ve got you covered with their All The Time Breakfast (14.95) — fried or scrambled eggs, home fries, sausages and toast, with your choice of bacon, ham or smoked turkey.
Fran’s on College
Fran’s Restaurant and Bar is a local chain with a classic all-night diner vibe. Francis “Fran” Deck opened the original location at Yonge and St. Clair in 1940. The famous and instantly recognizable location at Yonge & College (20 College Street) is a neighbourhood staple for home-style comfort food at all-hours. You have to try the Legendary Banquet Burger. The Banquet Burger was invented by Fran Deck over 75 years ago! It’s a half-pound burger patty topped with melted Canadian cheddar and bourbon maple bacon. Served with your choice of fries, home fries or tortilla chips and salsa. Finish the night off with Fran’s Original Award Winning Rice and Raisin Pudding, served warm or cold.
When you’re looking for a cozy spot to curl up in and enjoy some authentic Japanese cuisine, head over to Kintaro Izakaya (459 Church Street). This Japanese tapas bar specializes in small plates, designed to be shared and paired with the perfect drink. Izakaya means “I” (to stay) + “sakaya” (sake house). Come and hang out at this comfy sake house while digging into some yakitori (charcoal grilled skewers), sushi, ramen and familiar Japanese appetizers like Edamame ($4) or Seaweed Salad ($4). If you’re a little overwhelmed by your choices, or what drinks to pair them with, you can easily learn to order like a pro at Kintaro Izakaya. They’re open weekdays until 1am, and Friday and Saturday until 2am.
When late night hunger pangs hit, knowing where to go and what to order makes a neighbourhood feel a bit more like home.
